Gettin' Sporty

There are many different ways we get to stay active, everything from a friendly game of balloon volleyball or putting the golf ball to exercise with stretch bands and kick ball. We always have opportunities for everyone to really show their colors and be fully engaged at Juniper Village at Aurora. We know how very important it is to be able to have a moment of feeling that "win", to be able to release a little physical energy, and most important to feel a part of a team!! There's no better way to do all of this than with good friends.

Hot Diggity Dog!

Hot diggity dogs...for sale!!

Juniper Village at Aurora held a fundraiser event for the Walk to End Alzheimer's: a hot dog sale! We fired up the grill out front and had all the fixins', chips, and soda. Everyone loved the franks that were served. This was in conjunction with educational opportunity for families and local community members to learn about hybrid style vehicles. We had a local dealership bring in a Chevy Volt for an interactive experience for anyone that has ever been interested in a hybrid. One local community member even got to go for a ride in the vehicle. Of the many very cool features that this car has, the most impressive is the environmental sustainability. With this, we know that we will be able to "Breathe In Life" a little easier.

Casino Night...Lucky 13

Juniper Village at Aurora celebrated our 13th anniversary on August 13th. Nothing but luck this evening...especially with the Wheel of Fortune, the Black Jack table and dealer, and a Roulette Wheel.
Residents, Families, Associates, and community members came to try their luck. What a great opportunity to play the games and remember the times we've had at a real casino, without the worries of using real money. The prize? Of course, a laughing good time!! The ultimate prize has been the on-going comments, for days after our celebration, from residents, letting us know what a wonderful time they had. As one gentleman stated, "it's the best time I've had so far".

The ambiance was to rave on. Everything from fanciful hors d'oeuvres, jack pot cocktails, winning tunes, and smiles galore...it certainly proved that turning 13, for Juniper Village at Aurora, is a very good thing (whether luck has anything to do with it or not).

We also continued our efforts of fundraising for the Walk to End Alzheimer's with a silent auction. Products and services were donated from local business companies and members. As of today, we have raised over $1000 for the Alzheimer's Association!! Thank you to everyone that participated. The "Walk" is coming up on Saturday, September 15th--join our team and walk!

Chill Off Fundraiser!

Juniper Village at Aurora hosted an Ice Cream Chill Off fundraiser benefit for the Alliance for Healthy Aging. This was a perfect opportunity for us to get those ice cream makers out and test our skills at making home made ice cream!! It was exactly was needed on this scorcher of a warm day in Colorado. We even had Jerry come to "judge" the ice creams. Participants brought in Mint Chocolate Chip, Peach Amaretto, and Chocolate flavors. The winner was crowned with the Ice Cream Crown! Best Flavor...Peach Amaretto.

The Alliance For Healthy Aging is a non-profit organization, whose mission is "education prior to need" for our aging adults population. Being able help the "sandwich" generation, and anyone else experiencing the challenges faced in the role of a caregiver to make well educated decision before finding themselves in a crisis situation. Juniper Village at Aurora supports the efforts of AHA as they continue to educate the community in the resources that are so readily available to all!!

Leaders in Dementia Care...We Always Knew It!

Juniper Village at Aurora is proud to announce the achievement of the Leaders in Dementia Care Certification. This certification was introduced as part of the recommendations in the Colorado State
Alzheimer's Disease Plan, created by the Colorado Alzheimer's Coordinating Council. This new training standard (as of July 1, 2012) is supported by the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment. The Certification requirements are that at least 75% of all associates have completed 8 hours of annual Alzheimer's training by a qualified instructor, presented in an approved manner. This is an annual certification. It is Juniper's commitment to provide quality service to residents, and to set associates up for success (with the right job, the right training, right tools, etc), this was a certificate that would be able to prove this measure of standard. Happy 4th of July!

Juniper Village at Aurora celebrated with a Big Bang this 4th of July.  Although there were no signs of Fireworks, the many family and friends who came out had a blast!  A big crowd lined up for the delicious barbecued bratwurst, hot dogs, and pulled pork sandwiches. As we ate, we were entertained by the beautiful sounds of a bagpiper playing patriotic tunes; some even posed for a picture with our entertainer.  Everyone was ranting and raving about the BBQ, and the great turnout. We ended the event with some good ol American Pie and tons of smiles!  Happy 4th of July Everyone!

It's Okay to Speak Up!

Juniper Village at Aurora teamed up with Juniper Village at The Spearly Center to attend It's Okay to Speak Up - A World Elder Abuse Awareness Event on Friday, June 15 at the Denver City Park. Many seniors and advocates for seniors attended the event and listened to the exciting speakers and wonderful entertainers. Senator Evie Hudak
and State Representative Sue Schafer both spoke about upcoming initiatives to increase awareness and reporting of elder abuse. Elbra Wedgeworth of Denver Health; Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey, Penny May of Denver Human Services and Senior Source at 9 News John Allen presented as well. The Raging Grannies gave a very entertaining performance giving a new twist to old songs. They were definitely the highlight to the event! Juniper Village gave away more than 200 of our colorful "Frog Bags" to the delight of all who attended.

The purpose of the event was to educate our aging populations and their families and caregivers about how to determine if there is abuse, where to report it and skills for prevention. The event was held at the beautiful boathouse in Denver's City Park. Sunny skies and a light breeze made the day even more perfect. Lunch was complimentary as was the resource fair where attendees received information from many different vendors including Juniper Village.
